How to Make Your Business Environmentally Friendly

Running a business that is environmentally friendly is not only good for the wider world, but great for managing your costs. By cutting down on waste, you can easily save money.

There are a number of things you can do to make your operations more environmentally friendly, so we’ve compiled a list of some of our ideas of how you can operate a greener business.

Probably the most common thing you think of when considering green operations is recycling. Use 100% recyclable stretch film to wrap your hay bales or palettes, print on both sides of paper if possible, and take a look at our list of ideas on how to reuse palettes.

On a smaller level, consider putting three bins in your cafeteria or offices – one for general waste, one for plastic and one for paper or cardboard. The only thing you need to do after that is encourage workers to use them!

Turn off Equipment

Whether it’s a tap, plug or bigger machinery, turn it off at the end of the day or after use. If there are some things that need to be left on then try using a traffic light system around your buildings. Red stickers indicate they are not to be switched off, amber suggests it can be turned off at the end of the day and green means always switch off straight away. So by putting a green sticker on the bathroom light switch you could end up making some big savings throughout the year.

Also insist on people turning taps off properly after use – you’d be surprised how much water a dripping tap can waste!

Energy Saving Techniques

Investing in LED lights could save you up to £24 for every single bulb you switch per year. Despite the initial costs being more than other types of energy saving lights, they last longer and pay for themselves within five months – well worth the investment!

If you need to contact your clients or staff regularly, use email rather than paper documents. By not printing on paper regularly, you can take some of those costs out of the equation. If you do need to print, then consider having it double-sided, which will instantly save you 50%!
